The following equipment and technologies are available for use in the Department of Bioengineering. Use of the shared resources is restricted to laboratory groups associated with Bioengineering faculty and their collaborators. By following the link to each resource, you can learn more about usage requirements, scheduling and contact information. Also be sure to take a look at the vast list of resources at Penn that are also available to our Bioengineers.

Resources:

1470 Automatic Gamma Counter: The 1470 Automatic Gamma Counter can take multiple samples for radiometric detection.  The Gamma Counter uses a unique well-type detector and sample changer system along with highly effective lead shielding, resulting in high counting efficiency, constant background and minimal crosstalk.  This device has one detector.

20/20 Single Tube Luminometer: The 20/20 Luminometer is designed to run bioluminescent assays, such as reporter gene assays, as well as chemiluminiscent assays.  A touch screen interface provides comprehensive instrument control and data collection.

7300 Real-time PCR System: This PCR has advanced multicolor detection capabilities for gene expression analysis, absolute quantitation, SNP genotyping and +/- assays utilizing internal positive controls.  This PCR uses a 96-well block and takes 0.2mL tubes.

Avanti J-E Centrifuge: The Avanti J-E centrifuge operates at speeds of up to 21,000 rpm (53,300 x g).

Breeze HPLC for Gel Permeation Chromatography: The Breeze HPLC GPC System includes software, pump, detector and injector.  This Breeze system is configured for Gel Permeation Chromatography.

CentriVap Speed Vacuum: CentriVap Centrifugal Vacuum Concentrators use a combination of centrifugal force, vacuum and heat for speed evaporation of multiple small samples. The CentriVap’s larger chamber and selection of higher capacity rotors offer the maximum throughput required by molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry, pharmaceutical research and analytical chemistry laboratories. As many as 132 samples may be processed at once. Sample sizes range from a few microliters up to 25 milliliters. In addition, the Microtiter Plate Rotor holds four standard or two deep well plates. The CentriVap also has a Cold Trap, protecting the accessory vacuum pump from the corrosive effects of vapors and fumes as they evaporate from the samples.

Confocal and Multiphoton Imaging Facility: The space includes imaging laboratories with light microscopes, the confocal and multiphoton microscope, a computer analysis area to do three-dimensional reconstruction and  morphometry, and an experiment prep space including a culture area with incubator.

Contact Angle Meter: The ChemInstruments CAM-Plus contact angle meter combines reliable surface energy measurement with ease of use. The patented “Half Angle” measurement method eliminates the difficulties associated with tangent angle measurement methods.  With simple, reliable and consistent operation, one can quickly determine surface energy measurements to help in coating operations of all types.

DU Series 730 UV/Vis Scanning Spectrophotometer: The DU Series Spectrophotometer uses a narrow bandwidth allowing samples to be scanned with excellent resolution. With its focused-beam design, the system provides optimal and reproducible results for small samples. The system has a touch-screen user.

Easycyte Flow Cytometer: The Easycyte Flow Cytometer is a desktop single-cell analysis system that can perform a wide range of multi-color cellular assays.  The system accommodates both a 96-well plate and centrifuge tubes.

Gene Pulser Xcell Electroporation System: The Gene Pulser Xcell is a modular electroporation system, which includes a main unit, two accessory modules (the CE module and the PC module), and the ShockPod cuvette chamber. The CE module is recommended for use with the Gene Pulser Xcell main unit for electroporation of most eukaryotic cells, including mammalian cells and plant protoplasts. The PC module is recommended for electroporation of bacteria and fungi, as well as other applications where high-voltage pulses are applied to samples of small volume and high resistance.

HPLC Series 1200: The Agilent Series HPLC 1200 provides spectral information from 190 to 950nm, mass selective detection, reliable high sensitivity nanospray, superior injection precision with low carryover and high resolution chromatography.

MicroBeta TriLux Scintillation and Luminescence Counter: The MicroBeta TriLux detects beta, gamma and glow luminescence.  The device provides true coincidence counting with exceptional sensitivity while maintaining low backgrounds.

Nicolet 6700 FT-IR Spectrometer: The Nicolet 6700 FT-IR spectrometer can be configured for multiple spectral ranges (far-IR to UV-Vis), with the option of gold-coated or aluminum optics. The temperature of the source during normal operation is electronically controlled.  Users have additional options of 'Rest' and 'Turbo' mode. The former helps to extend the life of the source, while the latter provides extra output for difficult samples.

Odyssey Infrared Imaging System: The Odyssey Infrared Imaging System uses direct infrared fluorescence detection for Western blot analysis.  Infrared detection gives you the quantitative analysis and wide linear dynamic range that chemiluminescence can’t. Strong and weak bands on the same blot are accurately detected without the uncertainty and inconvenience of multiple exposures, and without spending time in the darkroom. The Odyssey System gives you clear, sharp, reproducible bands without fuzziness or “blowout”. Bands hidden by overexposure with chemiluminescence become clear when imaged with Odyssey.

Optima L-100 K BioSafe Centrifuge System: The Optima L-100 K BioSafe Centrifuge is capable of generating 802,000 x g at speeds up to 100,000 rpm.

P-1000 Flaming-Brown Micropipetter: The P-1000 Micropipette Puller fabricates micropipettes and offers a color touchscreen interface and an extensive library of programs found in the popular Sutter Cookbook. You need only specify the glass, filament, and type of pipette you require and a suitable program will be identified. Copy and paste functions assure that programs can be easily written and the line repeat mode simplifies multi-line programming. User notes can be  added to each program for annotating important information. Help topics are pre-loaded to assist with on-site troubleshooting and the built-in glossary includes text, pictures, and diagrams explaining the terms used in micropipette fabrication. A rotary dial is offered as an alternative to the keypad for numerical entry.

PS3 Peptide Synthesizer: The PS3 is a simple peptide Synthesizer.  The PS3 has 3 serial reaction vessels and allows up to 45 couplings without user intervention or reloading.

Radiance 2000 Confocal Multi-photon system and inverted microscope: The Radiance 2000 System by Bio-Rad provides a wide range of scan speeds (25-750Hz), three internal confocal detectors and full 360 degree scan rotation. The microscope which uses this system is a Nikon TE-300 Inverted Microscope.

X-Omat 2000A Processor: The X-Omat is a film developer for medium and low-volume processing applications.  The standard cycle (120 seconds) processes 100 35x43cm films an hour.

Zetasizer Nano Series: The Zetasizer Nano series can perform a combination of three parameters: particle size analysis, zeta potential measurement, and molecular weight measurement.  The analyzer can enable measurements of particles and molecules from 0.6nm to 6 microns.  The device provides accurate measurements of zeta potential in aqueous and non-aqueous dispersions.  An avalanche-photodiode detector and fiber detection optics give the sensitivity and stability required for absolute molecular weight measurements.
